Teaching at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences
(Lehre am Institut für Pharmazie)

Department of Pharmaceutics, Biotechnology & Quality Management
(Abteilung Pharmazeutische Technologie, Biopharmazie und Qualitätsmanagement)

General information:

The duration of the studies of pharmacy is 4 years in Germany, i. e. a total of 8 terms. There is a summer term (Sommersemester) with lectures and practicals from approx. April 15th to July 15th and a winter term (Wintersemester) with lectures and practicals from approx. October 15th until February 15th .

The content of the curriculum for pharmacy students is defined by the German pharmacy curriculum (Approbationsordnung) being valid for all countries of Germany. That means the same lectures, seminars and practicals are offered at all German universities. There is also a list of contents for the different topics to be taught, of course giving a certain frame of flexibility regarding emphasis of certain topics. The emphasis might vary from university to university depending on the professors and teaching personnel running the education.

Because of the uniform regulation of the education of pharmacy students, certificates acquired at one university are accepted at all other German universities.

The study itself is divided into two parts, one basic part of 2 years (Grundstudium) and a second more specialised part of another two years (Hauptstudium). The major exams are after the first 2 years (Erstes Staatsexamen) and after 4 years at the end of the studies (Zweites Staatsexamen), the examinations are organised by the State (not the university). Therefore the certificate issued is a “State certificate”, no university certificate.

Varying from university to university there are also lectures and courses offered in addition to the compulsory program of the official German pharmacy curriculum (Approbationsordnung).

The first project has been run during the winter term 2002/2003. It was composed of two days in the company Schering plus a number of seminars given at the department of pharmaceutical sciences. The seminars were given by female employees from Schering AG covering various aspects of working in a pharmaceutical company, especially highlighting the opportunities for female pharmacists in pharmaceutical companies, specially considering work balance and quality of work and life.
